History of Carlisle

Carlisle is the historic capital of Cumbria and one of the great cities of northern England, sitting just south of the Scottish border. While in England, Carlisle has always been deeply connected to the story of southern Scotland — it served as an English stronghold during the Wars of Scottish Independence and as the first city encountered by Bonnie Prince Charlie's army during the 1745 Jacobite rising.

The Romans established a fort here — Luguvalium — as part of the Stanegate frontier system before the construction of Hadrian's Wall. After the Roman withdrawal, Carlisle became part of sub-Roman Rheged before passing through Northumbrian, Scottish, and eventually English hands — a reflection of its position on one of the most contested frontiers in British history.

Carlisle Castle, begun by William Rufus in 1092, has witnessed extraordinary history — including the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots in 1568 and the last siege of an English castle in the Civil War. The cathedral, founded in 1122, contains some of the finest medieval stained glass in England.

Today Carlisle is a vibrant city of around 75,000 people and an important hub on the West Coast Main Line. It falls comfortably within our 40-mile service radius from Dumfries, and we cover the city and its surrounding villages with no additional travel charges.
