The Muckle Toon — Heart of Eskdale

History of Langholm

Langholm — affectionately known as "the Muckle Toon" — is the principal settlement of Eskdale, the valley of the River Esk in the north-eastern corner of Dumfries and Galloway. Situated at the confluence of the Esk, Ewes Water, and Wauchope Water, the town has a dramatic setting of wooded hills and rushing rivers that gives it a character all its own.

The town's history is intimately connected with the textile industry. From the late 18th century, Langholm developed as a centre of tweed and wool production, with several mills operating on the fast-flowing rivers. At its peak the textile trade supported the majority of the town's population, and the fine Victorian architecture throughout Langholm reflects the prosperity it brought.

Langholm is famous for its Common Riding — an annual ceremony in July in which the boundaries of the Common Good land are ridden on horseback, one of the oldest and most atmospheric of all the Border Common Ridings. The town is closely associated with the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, one of the most important Scottish literary figures of the 20th century, born here in 1892.

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, had family roots in Langholm and visited in 1972 to receive the freedom of the burgh — a remarkable chapter in the town's long history.
