History of Moffat

Moffat is an exceptionally attractive market town nestled in the upper valley of the River Annan, surrounded by the rolling green hills of the Southern Uplands. Despite its modest size, Moffat has played a disproportionately large role in Scottish history and remains one of the most popular inland destinations in southern Scotland.

The town's fame grew enormously in the 18th century when sulphurous spring waters were found to have healing properties, making Moffat a fashionable spa destination drawing visitors from across Scotland. The mineral well survives at Hartfell Spa, a short walk from the town centre. Moffat's unusually wide main street — one of the broadest in Scotland — was designed to accommodate the large numbers of visitors and livestock that thronged the town.

The iconic ram statue at the foot of the High Street reflects Moffat's deep connection to sheep farming. The town is the birthplace of John Loudon McAdam, the engineer who pioneered the road construction system that bears his name and transformed transport across the world.

Moffat sits at the heart of remarkable landscape: the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall — one of Scotland's highest — lies just a few miles north-east, and the dramatic Devil's Beef Tub is within easy reach. The town is a favourite base for walking, cycling, and exploring the Southern Uplands.
