History of Dalbeattie

Dalbeattie is a compact and handsome town on the Urr Water in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, built almost entirely from the distinctive silvery-grey granite that gives it its name. Surrounded by gentle wooded hills and within easy reach of the dramatic Colvend Coast, Dalbeattie occupies one of the most attractive settings in south-west Scotland.

The town's growth in the 19th century was driven almost entirely by its granite quarries. The Craignair quarry produced granite of exceptional quality exported across Britain and beyond — used in the construction of the Thames Embankment in London, the docks at Liverpool, and buildings throughout the British Empire. At the height of the granite trade, hundreds of workers made Dalbeattie one of the more prosperous towns in the Stewartry.

The legacy of the granite industry remains visible throughout Dalbeattie — in the characteristic grey stone buildings, the solid Victorian architecture, and a distinctive character that sets it apart from other regional settlements.

Today Dalbeattie is the gateway to the 7stanes mountain bike trail network, and the nearby Dalbeattie Forest offers outstanding off-road cycling. The sheltered bays of Rockcliffe and Kippford on the Colvend Coast lie just a few miles south.
