Ancient Royal Burgh in Upper Nithsdale
History of Sanquhar
Sanquhar — pronounced "Sankur" — is one of Scotland's oldest royal burghs, receiving its charter in 1484, though its history as a settlement stretches back considerably further. Positioned in the valley of the River Nith between the Southern Uplands, it served as an important staging post on the route between Edinburgh and the south-west for centuries.
The town is best known historically for the two "Sanquhar Declarations" of the 17th century. In 1680 the Covenanting minister Richard Cameron posted a declaration on the market cross formally rejecting the authority of King Charles II — an act of remarkable defiance that made Sanquhar a focal point of the Presbyterian resistance. The Covenanters' struggle for religious freedom left deep marks across this part of Scotland.
Sanquhar Castle — a ruined stronghold of the Crichton and Douglas families — dates to the 13th century. Sanquhar Post Office, established in 1712 and still operating, is widely regarded as the oldest post office in the world.
Coal mining was historically important in the area, shaping communities of upper Nithsdale well into the 20th century. Today Sanquhar is a quiet market town serving the hill farming communities of the surrounding landscape.
